Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process of internalizing moral and ethical values in pesantren-based Islamic Religious Education (PAI) and its contribution to students’ character development. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study method at an Islamic boarding school, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the internalization of moral and ethical values is carried out through three main stages: value transformation, value transaction, and value transinternalization. The strategies employed include exemplary conduct (uswah hasanah), habituation, advice (mau‘izhah), discipline, and reflection. The integrated pesantren environment, encompassing formal learning, kitab kuning studies, and residential life, creates a conducive educational ecosystem for developing students’ religious character, politeness, responsibility, and independence. This study concludes that pesantren-based education is effective in internalizing moral and ethical values as a foundation for students’ character development.
